About Sajazarra
The historically significant town of Sajazarra was already mentioned in the 11th century.
Over the centuries, many visitors have been drawn to the village because of its architectural character and attractive setting.
Sajazarra lies where the Aguanal and Ea rivers meet, surrounded by vineyards in the northwest of Rioja Alta.
The Castle & Local History
The castle stands on a hill and is one of the defining elements of Sajazarra’s townscape.
During restoration work, an old wine press was discovered in the castle cellars.
This discovery inspired the owner’s family to reconnect the property with the region’s traditional wine culture.
Wine & Bodegas
In 1973, the acquisition of farmland at the foot of the Obarenes Mountains laid the foundation for Bodegas Castillo de Sajazarra.
The first wine was subsequently produced, beginning a tradition centred on the region’s characteristic grape varieties.
Sajazarra is an excellent starting point for visiting the many wineries located throughout this historic wine-growing region.
Rioja’s long winemaking tradition has contributed to the international reputation of the region for centuries.
Wine Tourism & Winter Sports
Sajazarra provides a convenient base for exploring the many excellent bodegas located throughout Rioja.
During winter, wine tourism can also be combined with winter sports.
The ski area of Ezcaray can be reached in approximately 45 minutes by car.
Local Heritage & The Apartment
Two families have played an important role in the history of Sajazarra: the Ruiz de Loizaga family and the Loma Osorio family.
A descendant of the Loma Osorio family, artist Elvira Isasi Loma Osorio, offers a large ground-floor apartment within her family mansion.
